Leading In Times of Crisis Series Q+A

Janet is a native Californian. She made Ventura County her home in 2001, and began her career in real estate. Prior to coming to real estate, she spent 19 years managing technical service and sales support teams in the Telecommunications as Software industries in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Texas, London, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Spain, and Italy.

Giving back to an industry that has afforded her so many opportunities, and is ever-changing, continues to be an important objective for her. She has been recognized by her peers as the 2008 Realtor of the Year for the Ventura County Coastal Association of Realtors (VCCAR) for her volunteer work on behalf of the real estate community. She has held countless leadership positions at the local and state level!

She is currently the Branch Manager with Century 21 Everest in Camarillo, CA, where she is also on the Compliance Team with the Broker of Record. She is consistently ranked in the top 3 branch offices with Century 21 Everest for production and rate the highest in agent retention.

Her passion is truly serving others and helping them to achieve their highest potential. She believes that in serving her Associates, they not only attain their goals but have the opportunity to realize their dreams.

Q1: What do you believe is the biggest opportunity for leaders right now?

Maintaining and creating connectivity - relationships in your personal and business ecosystem. Everyone has a story about how they have been affected by recent events and people want to be truly heard. I manage a real estate office and I no longer list and sell real estate. What happens when a servant leader, like myself, is placed on furlough and you can no longer formally do what you do that gives you so much pleasure? The relationships I've created with the people I serve have been my saving grace. My champions. My fierce advocates. My Raving Fans. I realize I've created that loyalty by being their saving grace, their champion, their fierce advocate and their raving fan. So, the challenge is to first seek to understand people you have stewardship over. What are their goals? Do they even have goals? Help them DREAM their future by asking questions and creating a safe zone for them to explore their wants so that they can create goals - Do Not Judge - It's their dream, not yours. Don't hesitate to be their mirror. People will say what they want and then look for ways to sabotage getting it. Some people will not readily allow you to be their mirror, so you need to cultivate their trust (hence creating a safe zone and showing genuine interest in them). I have to constantly remind myself that people on are their own timeline and journey, so patience is key.

Q2: How about the biggest CHALLENGE?

Developing and maintaining a disciplined schedule. This is difficult even when there is no immediate crisis. Know what your objectives are and realize that not everything needs to be done at once. I am a big fan of Stephen Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) and the Covey Institute and for years used a Franklin Planner. When the digital age of calendaring hit, I wholeheartedly embraced it and abandoned my Franklin Planner. More recently, I have rediscovered the true value of having a paper planner to organize my year. I am now preaching to my agents the value of a great planner. I'm known for saying if it's not in my schedule, it doesn't happen. Now I'm saying if it's not future-planned and scheduled, it doesn't happen. For agents, I'm recommending The Organized Agent. Everything that you need to plan for and execute as a real estate agent is present in that planner, but I haven't found that kind of planner for a manager, so I created my own using a disc-type planner.

Q3: What advice and resources are you sharing the most?

Well, having a great planner is one resource (The Organized Agent). There are so many resources in real estate, one can get paralyzed and decide it's overwhelming. It's important to guide agents to the right resources for where they are in their business at that point in time. Some of the resources I recommend having are a CRM tool that they will use. Century 21 offers a couple, but so does every other brokerage, as well as the open market. Pick one you like and use it - your SOI needs to hear from you as their real estate expert. Otherwise they're getting their real estate fix from someone else that may not have their best interest in mind. Know your Market Stats. Use RPR. CAR.org - So much great information!

Q4: What tips do you have for leaders on how to communicate effectively right now?

Ask questions and get to know your people. Find out what they NEED and WANT, listen, then plan how you are going to achieve your objectives with your people in mind. Also, Texting is NOT a form of good communication to have a conversation or to negotiate a deal. Don't get me wrong, texting is great for setting and confirming appointments, throwing out ideas and minor chit-chat, but should not take the place of higher forms of communication. I suggest using confirming emails after both verbal and text conversations so you can ensure you have true understanding of what just transpired.

In difficult conversations or situations, BREATHE before responding. Seek understanding and don't assume anything. All forms of communication are trying to get to a place of understanding and learning or common ground.

Additional Words of Wisdom

Be willing to adapt - get out of your comfort zone everyday. To truly connect with people, it's okay to be uncomfortable so that others are comfortable - you can then begin building a deeper trust and create your fans.

Have personalized mantras/affirmations. Book-end your day with these affirmations (before you go to bed and when you wake up). What you put in your brain informs how you will behave and move through your day.
