10-30 * Wisdom from Marci James

Hello WomanUP!® Community!

Debra shared this week’s WUPdates:

  • Book Club MeetUP was FIRE. November will be How Women Rise… we have so much interest in doing another.

  • Q4 Wisdom Series kicks off next week with "How to Build and Nurture a Thriving Community!" https://www.iamwomanup.com/wisdomseries

  • These will be on Wednesdays - starting in November thru mid-December. We will hit the hot topics from the Coffee + Conversations and the Lunch + Learns from our Virtual WomanUP!® conference with help from our mentors!

Sara also shared some important updates from C.A.R.:

  • We are in full election mode with 4 more days until Election Day 2020. We are expecting a record turnout this year. As of today over 85 m Americans have voted, including 9.1m in CA and 9m in TX. https://electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/index.html for anyone who wants to track...

  • For our CA Contingent we have a sponsored proposition on the ballot: Prop 19

  • First – Tax portability provides homeowners, 55 years of age and older, the ability to carry their tax base anywhere in the state, regardless of price. Homeowners will be able to take advantage of portability three times in their life. This tax benefit is also extended to wildfire victims and people with disabilities. In the first year alone, Proposition 19 is estimated to generate up to 75,000 new transactions. This permanent tax benefit will also apply to homes of greater value anywhere in the state.

  • Second- Prop. 19 protects the ability of children and grandchildren to keep the family home -they inherit- when the home is used as a primary residence. This is a tax benefit vulnerable to Sacramento politicians who seek to fully eliminate it. Proposition 19 protects this tax benefit for good! Additionally, this tax benefit is also extended to family farms, so that children and grandchildren that inherit the family farm can also enjoy this tax benefit.

Empowered Women Empower Others Q+A with Marci James

Q1: What was your first leadership role? Did you ask/ apply for it or were you recruited?

High school newspaper editor, president of riding club (high school), College Govt rep for my Dorm, Historian for my sorority, MOM (most challenging leadership role ever)!  Career wise, first true management role was with Obeo, but I don’t believe you have to be a manager to be a leader.

Q2: What has been your biggest leadership lesson this year?  How did you learn it?

Leaders have to break bad news sometimes.  You cannot over-communicate. Especially in situations where there is fear (real or perceived).  How do you help your team when you’re struggling yourself - that was my challenge.

Also… Don’t fear the difficult relationships at work… There’s almost always someone you just don’t click with. I know I learn the most from the relationships I struggle with the most. I believe these are lessons we are meant to learn.

Q3: What were your top takeaways from WomanUP!® 2020?

"How to Negotiate Your Worth" session and the "How to Pivot your Brand" session.

Q4: Final words of wisdom?

Be a servant.  “True leaders are servants, and have that servant mentality. I’m not here for the attention or the glory, I’m here to help YOU succeed.”

Be Present… I find this to be one of the biggest struggles for many leaders. So many distractions, constantly thinking of the next meeting, etc.
